During the trial of Jesus, Pilate asked, “What is truth?” (John 18:38). Jesus, the Truth, stood before him.
Was Pilate’s question an honest seeking, or was he realizing that the possessions, position, and pride that had formed the foundation of his life to that point were now being seen in the light of Truth and found wanting.
We can become so comfortable in our traditions and routines that we shut out the very light and truth of God. Our self-righteousness can block the work of God’s righteousness in our hearts.
Each day, we must choose to allow God’s truth to penetrate into the corners of our souls and sweep out the cobwebs of self-righteousness that so quickly form. It is His Truth that separates the wrong from the right. It is His righteousness that saves and keeps us. It is His righteousness that forms the foundation that supports us in the trials of this life and in eternity to come.
Will we choose Truth?
Walls of rules and customssupport our souls, dividing the unthinkablefrom the of course, building our self-sufficient wisdomwith bricks of our own understanding,as pride provides the mortarthat strengthensour impervious defenses.
Truth batters at these walls, calling us toopen hearts that acknowledgewe are not supreme in our understanding, shaking the foundationsof our man-created Babel, and shining the Light of Godinto the darknessof self righteousness.
Luke 11:42 But woe unto you, Pharisees! for you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought you to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
Job 38:1, 2 Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
