Unchangeable

This world comes at us fast and furious.

New technology. New gadgets. New expectations. New laws. New taxes. New ways of doing things. Updates to phones. Updates to banking. We just get used to a system, and the system changes. At work and at home we live in a constant state of upheaval. There seems to be no place of rest.

I hate to plug in my phone at night, because I'm afraid it will look different when I wake up.

Some days I feel the frustration building in my soul, and I need a place to stand – a firm place that does not change.

I find that place, that person, in God.

This morning as I read Psalm 18, my soul settled in the everlasting foundation of who God is, and I proclaimed with David, “I WILL love thee, O LORD my strength” (Psalm 18:1, KJV).

“The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. I will call up the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from my enemies” (Psalm 18:2 – 3, KJV).

It sounds like David got carried away as he began to think about Who God is, but I don’t think he did. God is all the attributes that David claimed. Sometimes in this shaky world where I feel tossed about, I forget that I am standing on the Rock of the ages. I cannot be moved.

I believe as David faced the enemies of his day, he was doing three things. He was renewing his commitment to love the Lord, he was reminding himself of all that God is, and he was committing to call on the Lord for help.

Today, I need to do the same.

When frustrations begin to rise in my soul, it is time to remember Whose I am and stop and renew my love relationship with Him. I love the Lord. Nothing is more important than that.

Then, I need to spend some time remembering Who my Father is. He is my Rock, my Fortress, my Deliverer, my Strength, my Buckler (symbolizes God’s intimate protection), the Horn of my Salvation (irresistible strength), my high tower (place of safety).

Finally, I must stop relying on myself and call on Him who is worthy to be praised. He alone can provide the strength I need to navigate this changing world. He alone is a firm foundation for my life.

So, I guess I will plug my phone in to charge tonight. If the update changes all my settings again, I know whom I love, and I know the One on whom I can depend.

He never changes.

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever” (Hebrews 13:8, KJV).

Father, thank You for being the firm foundation in this shaky world. Thank You for never changing. Help me to remain focused on You no matter what is going on around me. I know that I have to navigate through this life, and I know that You can provide the wisdom and strength for me to do that. I give my frustrations to You. I love You, Lord, my strength and my redeemer.

How about you? What changes are hard for you to navigate? Think about how you will allow God to help you through the uncertainties that you face each day.
