Morning Stillness

Be still, and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10).
I am enveloped by stillness as I step into the dawning day. The silence is palatable, and I am in awe as I view the rising morning mist.
Broken only by the light chatter of the ever-moving purple martins, quiet rules the river. Last night’s high water has moved downstream, exposing rocky bars in the middle of the riverbed. Fallen branches and logs on the banks that were covered by water are now visible in tangled masses. They wait for the next release of water from the dam.
A silent heron stands in the mist at the water’s edge. His stillness lends to his specter-like appearance.

Anglers are active, each seeking his share of the morning’s catch. Floating in boats without motors, they silently cast as if they, too, are anxious not to disturb the sacred quiet.
I watch each scene, drinking in the graceful movements of drifting boats and lines, swooping birds, and slowly moving water.
Beauty and soul rest are nestled in this morning stillness. It calls to my heart. I lay aside the noise of my busyness, my importance, my cares, and I listen.
As I listen, I understand a little more why God said, “Be still, and know that I am God.” Here, everyday problems and cares fade as my heart remembers Who God is. In this stillness, I can hear past the clatter of this world to His eternal truth.
He is God.
He is Creator.
He is omnipotent.
He is good.
He is love.
I fill my heart with His truth, praying my heart will remember when I am enmeshed in the noise again.
Father, Remind me that You are always as close as my heart. I do not have to be in a special place to experience Your stillness and Your peace. Keep my heart focused on the eternal truth of Who You are in the noise of this world. You are good. You are grace. You are love.
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust (Psalm 91:1 – 2, KJV).
