Don’t Waste Christmas

On Christmas we remember and celebrate the birth of our Savior, what many think of as the beginning of his life. While it was the start of his life as a human being on this Earth, it was also a continuation of his eternal being.

John chapter one tells us that he was in the beginning, the creator of all things. He was life. He was light. He was God.

Then he came.

John describes his coming so perfectly. And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth (John 1:14).

The creator God took on flesh and lived with us.

He came into life’s most humble state, that of a helpless baby. He experienced every stage of life that mankind must face. He was born, he lived, he died. But the story does not end there.

Jesus, the Christ, conquered death. He displayed his authority over darkness, and he rose again.

He brought grace, unmerited favor, to us as John said. And he brought truth.

He overcame the darkness with his light.

He overcame the lies of Satan with truth.

He overcame the power of death with life.

He overcame the despair of sin with peace, just as the angel announced to the shepherds on the morning of his birth.

Today, Christmas will be wasted if we do not recognize the eternal glory of the one who was born,

if we do not accept his grace and truth,

if we do not turn to him in repentance and faith.

God continued his story of grace in the birth of his son, Jesus, the Christ. He culminated his story with Jesus’ suffering and payment for our sin and his display of his power over sin when Jesus rose from the dead.

Because of Jesus, God’s story continues in my life and in the life of every believer today. Because of Jesus, I have eternal life with the Father, and I have the witness of his Holy Spirit in my heart. Because of Jesus.

If you know him, celebrate him this Christmas.

If you do not know him, don’t waste Christmas without him. He came for you.

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God (John 1:12 – 13).
