1 Corinthians 16:15 I beseech you, brethren, (ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints,)
I said I was not going there again.
But then the fall candy showed up. I had to buy some for the Trunk or Treat at church, and it was such a great buy, I bought some for the house, too.
Now, I have a jar of chocolates sitting in plain view on my kitchen counter. This is an unfortunate decision for someone who is addicted to chocolate.
Addicted is one of those words that can have a positive meaning or a negative one. The difference lies in what one is addicted to. Chocolate is not so good, but
the people in Steven’s family in Achaia were addicted to something great.
In many translations the word is translated as devoted, but I like the idea of being addicted to something good. Steven’s family was addicted to serving or ministering to fellow believers. This means that the service was their passion, their delight.
As I read this verse, I think about what (besides chocolate) I am devoted to. Where is my passion? What gets me up in the morning? What makes my heart sing?
Paul didn’t wonder about Steven’s passion. It was evident.
I want my devotion to be evident, too. I want to live a life that is addicted to following God’s way, loving what He loves, serving His heart.
If my addiction is focused on God, my priorities will be aligned with His and I will fulfill His purpose for me.
That sounds better than chocolate.
Check your heart today for your addiction. Is it focused on God or self? Look to Him for the best goals and purpose. His heart is calling.
Father,
Let my heart be fully devoted to You. May my focus on You crowd out the things that would cause me to waver from Your way. Fill me up with You.
