Why We Must Proclaim God’s Glory Today

“While I live will I praise the LORD: I will sing praises unto my God while I have any being.” – Psalm 146:2, KJV

The world is filled with chatter these days. Politics, philosophy, health advice, exercise advice, weight loss advice, the latest movies and television programs, sports, weather, you name it, we are talking up a storm.

But about Jesus, not so much. The One who died for me, who bore my sin, who redeemed me. I don’t hear His name a lot out in public, unless it is linked to a curse or in slander.

Yet, He created this world. He formed the mountains, spread out the skies, poured out the oceans, and flung the stars into space. He spoke light into the darkness and populated the forests with the birds and the creatures that roam over their leaf covered paths. He thought up the long-necked giraffe and duck-billed platypus. His creativity spun the sea anemones and the sea stars that lay along the sandy sea bottoms and filled the waters with too many fish to be numbered. He alone holds this sphere in place as it rotates around the ball of fire that we call the sun.

He is the One who is gracious and full of compassion (Psalm 145:8). He upholds those who fall, and He is near to them that call to Him (Psalm 145:14,18).

So, when I read Psalm 145, I like what David says. He commits to talking about God – every day. Read those first few verses:

  • I will extol (exalt, worship, praise) thee, my God, O King (verse 1)

  • I will bless (hallow, laud) thy name for ever and ever (verse 1)

  • Every day I will bless thee (verse 2)

  • I will praise thy name for ever and ever (verse 2)

  • One generation shall praise thy works to another (verse 4)

  • I will speak of the glorious honor of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works (verse 5)

  • I will declare thy greatness (verse 6)

Those “I will” statements are commitments that David is making. They are commitments that I need to make as well. And if I am praising God every day and speaking of His glorious honor and declaring His greatness, someone is going to hear it. I can’t be silent and keep this commitment. I just can’t.

I also have a responsibility to tell the next generation. How will they know if those who know Jesus now don’t tell them? There are plenty of people telling them that God didn’t create this world. That God doesn’t care about them. That they don’t matter. God’s people must speak truth into the lives and hearts of people around us.

We have been silent for too long.

If we don’t get busy, those rocks are going to start talking pretty soon.

37 And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen; 38 Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. 39 And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples. 40 And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out. (Luke 19:37 – 40, KJV).

He has made everything beautiful in His time. Ecclesiastes 3:11
