Trusting God Over Self-Reliance

Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God (Psalm 20:7,KJV ).

We are used to solving our own problems.

We know who to call and what to do. Our contact list is complete, and we will readily share it with those in need. Give us a problem, and we are all over it. Someone on FaceBook or Instagram is sure to know somebody who knows somebody who can help.

And, If we can’t fix it, there is always insurance.

We have become accustomed to taking care of things our way and in our time.

So, where does faith fit in our formulas? Where does prayer belong in our way of taking care of business?

Often, I’m afraid, it is our last resort when the doctors are scratching their heads, and the lawyers haven’t been able to find an answer. When financial advisors twirl their pens and solutions are nowhere to be found, we run on God and call for our friends to pray. Then we are desperate and, finally, we realize we need God.

I am convinced we have this backwards.

God never intended for us to be self-reliant. He never called for us to depend on ourselves to solve every problem. He has always told us to lay every care on Him. He has always told us to seek Him first.

Why don’t we?

Why don’t I?

I’m not saying that there is anything wrong with doctors or lawyers or any of the other helpers that God gives us, but they are just that – helpers.

But if stopped for just a moment to look past our own resources, we could run straight to the God of the Universe as our first line of defense. We could.

He (God) only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved (Psalm 62:2, NKJV).

How would life be different if we chose to turn to Him before we had used up every other contact in our contact book?

I believe we would find our hearts more at peace, more settled. I believe God would lead us to the right answers, the right helpers. I believe we would be more confident.

We would still need our helpers, but our priorities would be in order, and our hearts would not be so frantic. Our spirits would be still.

Think about that for a moment.

Today is a good day to check where we are placing our trust. Is it in the answers that the world offers, or are we truly trusting in the Lord our God?

I want to remember His name – first – and place my trust wholly in Him.

Won’t you join me?

Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts (Zechariah 4:6, KJV).
