The Problem with Weeds

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9, KJV).
I was only gone for one week.
I left happy flowers in clean pots, well-watered and weeded. I came back to blooming flowers in containers filled with weeds. Weeds of every dimension and type.
Where did they come from?

I never have to search for weeds. I pull them up, and the next day two more appear. It seems there is a never-ending supply. If I neglect the flowers for just a few days, the unwanted plants overtake the blooms.
A week without weeding makes the garden a mess.
It makes me think of an old saying that used to be popular on church signs: “A week without Bible reading and prayer makes one (spiritually) weak.”
Sin in my life is like the weeds that pop up among my flowers. It is ever present, and my flesh and the enemy are always looking for any chink in my armor. When I fail to daily bathe my life in God’s Word and talk with my Father in prayer, those weed-like attitudes and habits start showing up more and more regularly. I find myself thinking about me more than I focus on Jesus. I put myself ahead of others. Instead of the fragrance of the Savior in my life, the noxious scent of the world becomes overwhelming in my actions and my speech.
Daily confession to the Father is just like daily weeding in my garden. It takes care of those troublesome sins before they can take root in my life.
I’m thankful for the Master Gardener who tends my soul. I’m thankful for His Holy Spirit who points out the weeds that crop up in my life. I want His love to bloom in my life every day.
Father, weed out the wrong attitudes and thoughts that can so quickly take root in my soul. Keep me always blooming for You. In Jesus’ name I pray.
Think About It
