Facing Impossible Situations

God’s ways are not our ways. He doesn’t think like us, or maybe a better way to put that is we don’t think like Him. And He doesn’t act in ways that we expect Him to act.

His ways are so much higher than our ways.

If we could ever grasp this truth, we could walk with greater confidence each day, knowing that God is working even when we cannot trace His hand.

Exodus 14

What do you do when you are caught between two impossible situations and there is no place to turn?  That question swirled in the minds of the children of Israel as they stood in the wilderness, Pharoah and his army behind them and the Red Sea before them. There they were, a great mass of frightened people, led by one man who was listening to God. Scared, complaining, and pointing fingers at their leader, Moses, it seemed there was no good choice for them.

But that’s when God does His best work.

Moses relayed God’s direction to the people.

“Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will show to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen today, ye shall see them again no more forever. The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace” (Exodus 14:13-14, KJV).

Listen to those unreasonable words.

Fear not. God always tells us not to be afraid. Our default seems to be fear, but God is not in our fear (2 Timothy 1:7). God is stronger than anything that we will ever face. He is above all. He is sovereign.

Stand still. I don’t know about you, but when I’m faced with an impossible situation, I want to do something … anything. I want to research it on the internet, call a doctor, go to the hardware store, pick up something at Walmart, give someone advice. I need to do something. God often tells us to stand still – to wait, to expectantly wait for His guidance. This doesn’t mean that we can’t fix a meal or comfort a loved one, but it does mean that we may have to be patient before a solution to a problem becomes evident. We must trust the Father – without becoming frantic, or depressed, or overcome with worry, because

We will see the salvation of the Lord – God has an answer. His answer won’t be our answer. I guarantee you that not one Israelite could have guessed what God planned to do to solve their problem. They couldn’t see ahead to the parting of the Red Sea and the drowning of the Egyptian army. They were buried in their fear and the immediacy of their problem.

But God made a way. He had a plan.

I bet that when the Israelites got to the other side of the Red Sea and the waters closed over the Egyptian army, the Israelites walked away wondering how in the world God carried them over. They couldn’t explain it. They just knew that they had been on one side of a vast sea of trouble and now they were on the other, safe and dry.

That’s another truth that I realize after having faced my own Red Sea moments in life. As I look back on the really hard times that God has brought me through, I don’t remember how I made it. It seems impossible. I just know that I am on the other side now. I know His grace was sufficient. I know He made a way.

I don’t know what intolerable situation you are facing today, but I know the God of impossible situations. I know that He is still parting waters, and I know that you can trust Him. He will make a way.

Father, some days I feel like I’m going under, but I know I won’t because You are the One who parts the waters for Your children. Thank You for Your sovereign grace. Thank You for going before me even when I can’t see the way or determine the path. Thank You for making a way in the wilderness of this world. I am so glad that I can walk with confidence because I am walking with You. You are a good, good Father. In Jesus’ name I pray.

Heart Check –

·       What is your impossible situation today?

·       How will you trust God in this moment?

·       How will trusting God change this day for you?
