Encouragement from Psalm 33

Not long ago, when we were trying to avoid all the gunk going around, we ordered some tonic that was supposed to help build our immune system. It is full of good stuff that supports health and well-being, and even though it didn’t taste the best, we took it each day. I think it helped. I’m sure it didn’t hurt.
Some days, I feel like my spiritual system needs some immunity from the rhetoric that is shouted from the media that surrounds me. Some days, I need to fill up on what is right and true.
This morning, I found that Psalm 33 is a good place to go for reassurance and confidence.
Psalm 33 is full of hope and faith.
I can say that about all of Scripture, but today Psalm 33 stood out to me as a concentrated dose of truth, kind of like that tonic we were taking.
Psalm 33 begins with, “Rejoice in the Lord,” and that is a great way to start any day, no matter how many problems are rolling around in my head and heart. I can always rejoice in who my Lord is and what He has done for me. That changes my perspective from cloudy with a chance of showers to mostly sunny. I begin to see blessings in my path ahead.
As I keep reading, I find, “For the word of the Lord is right; and all His works are done in truth” (verse 4). Right away I know I am on the path of right and truth as I follow His way. I don’t have to wonder or worry.
One verse later, “The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord” (verse 5). That is certainly not what I hear on the news. Now I know it is time for me to open my eyes and search out His goodness in the day before me. It is there. He has assured me that the earth is full of His goodness. I see it in the dawning light, in the food I eat, and the clothes I wear. I find it in the trees and birds outside. I see it in His people, when I take the time to look past the surface frustrations and impatience. He is good, and He gives good things.
The psalm goes on to talk about God’s creative power and His supremacy over evil. Bad things may be happening now, and I don’t have to look hard to find them. There will come a time when God brings an end to the devices of the wicked (verse 11).
Verse eleven assures me of His steadfastness. His counsel stands sure forever. The “news” of this world changes every day, but God’s word does not change. The thoughts of His heart are eternal. I can rest in them.
The armies of this world may gather, and the kings may raise their forces, but God alone determines the outcome. He is Sovereign, and only He is worthy of my trust (verses16 – 17).
God’s eye is always on me. He cares for me and watches over me. I am never alone. (verse 18)
I can say with the psalmist, “Our soul waiteth for the Lord; he is our help and shield” (verse 20).
Father, Your words are so beautiful and give so much comfort and strength. Thank You for each one of them. Thank You for being Creator, Provider, Counselor, Deliverer, Protector, Helper, and Shield. Things can look pretty scary in this world. It is easy to get distracted from who You are. Your word reminds me. Thank You. Thank You for being my Joy. You are a good, good Father. In Jesus’ name I pray.
“Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we hope in thee” (Psalm 33:22, KJV).

Psalm 23 has always been my favorite when I need encouragement, but this one is good too.
