Above the Storm

“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31, KJV).
I have heard this verse all my life. In fact, a preacher often came to our church when I was young and sang a song based on this verse. I still remember him patting his foot as he sang, “Teach me, Lord, teach me, Lord, to wait.” He sang well and emphasized the importance of waiting on God. In my young mind, though, I think I missed the rest of the verse in Isaiah, even though it was included in the song.
This verse comes at the end of a passage that begins with a description of God as the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He doesn’t faint, and He doesn’t get weary. He is so high that we cannot begin to understand Him.
Can you imagine never getting tired? Never giving up? That’s our God.
God gives power to those who are weak, He increases the strength of those who have no might. Our God not only has His own vigor, but He is more than willing to share it with His children.
He knows that even young people grow weary and that even young men fall. But then He offers the secret and the promise of verse 31. Those who wait on God—those who abide in Him—find renewed strength, not in themselves, but in God.
Look at how He describes this stamina: “They shall mount up with wings like eagles.” This is a picture of how God’s people can respond to trials when they are abiding in Him and depending on Him.
An eagle is not afraid of a storm. In fact, an eagle will set his wings to catch the winds of a storm and allow the turbulence to carry him high above the clouds where there is calm. He will ride out the storm above the clouds.

As God’s children, we do not have to fear the storms and trials of this life. When we wait on God, when we depend on Him, and when we rest in Him, we do not avoid trouble, but we can rise above our times of trial with a calm spirit.
When we are not weighed down by fear of the storms of life, we can run and not be weary; we can walk without fainting. Fear is an extra burden in a time of trial. We can trust the everlasting God hold us and give us His strength to endure.
“Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.
29 He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.
30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:
31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint” (Isaiah 40:28–31, KJV).
“As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings: 12 So the Lord alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him” (Deuteronomy 32:11 – 12, KJV).
Father, I am so thankful that You raise me up above the storms of life. I know that there will always be trials. I know that I can''t escape them, but on Your wings I can ride above the storm. I can survive even when the winds blow like a hurricane and I feel like everything around is collapsing.
Thank You for the strength that You alone provide. Thank You for Your loving care. I just can't get over Your love. In Jesus' name I pray.
